“When my uncle returned from the war in the 1940’s, he saw an ad in the paper for a walnut dining room suite in the Gates at Armstrong Point, one of the oldest, stateliest residential areas in Winnipeg. The dining room suite belonged to an elderly lady, the matriarch of one of Winnipeg’s founding families, who was selling her home and moving in with her daughter. My uncle bought the suite and moved it to his mother’s home in East Kildonan.
The dining room suite was the centre and heart of my grandmother’s home for 40 years, and we enjoyed extended family dinners at the table, all three leaves in use, most Sundays until she was in her 80’s. In 1984, my grandmother moved to a retirement home, and my husband and I purchased the dining suite from her and brought it to our new home. The first thing we did was to have the table top and buffet top refinished. Since that time, the dining room suite has been moved to 8 different homes in 3 different provinces and states, and the table top finish was crackling (from extreme temperature changes during moves) and marred in places.
I found AM Furniture Finishing by googling for “fine furniture refinishers near me”. I Emailed Andy, and with photos I’d sent by Email, Andy was able to provide a refinishing recommendation and estimate for the table as well as the captain’s chair which had a crack in one of the back legs.
When the table was finished to Andy’s satisfaction and the chair repaired, he called and asked me to come to his studio and have a look. Upon seeing the table, I was absolutely blown away. I don’t think the table looked that good even when it was brand new. The finish was like glowing, liquid satin and the grain shimmered in the light. The refinishing job was beyond perfection.

We want to thank Andy and Meena for the excellent job in restoring our dining room table. We had the unfortunate experience of a flood in our home. This dining room table was severely damaged when the ceiling had opened up and poured water onto it. We thought it would be beyond repair.
Our restoration company had initially used another company for the work which was not to our satisfaction. I had my large coffee table and side table refinished by Andy for Christmas. They were 20-25 years old and my young granddaughter had spilled a bottle of nail polish on the coffee table a dozen or more years ago, removing the finish. I had the side table refinished maybe 15 years ago and it was not a stellar job.

I recently had a vanity redone and am more than thrilled with the finished result. Several old coats of paint had to be stripped from the piece and then a new coat of paint added with a glaze on top – which really took the piece to an entirely new level.
